Liverpool City Council is the largest local authority area within the Liverpool City Region, serving a population of almost half a million people. Liverpool is an extremely diverse and lively city, but has both areas of considerable wealth and some of the most deprived areas in the UK. The city has a committed Physical Activity and Sport Development Team, whose role is to encourage and promote physical activity for everyone. Recently the team has been involved with piloting a place-based approach with Sport England, and looking at new ways of working with local people. This work is complemented by the fantastic support received from the council’s 10 “Lifestyles Fitness Centres” which enable people to be active and lead more healthy lives. The council’s long term plans involve developing co-produced solutions with people living and working in Liverpool, that enable them to be active in a way that meets their needs.
